“The river is like an organism, it is internally self-adjusting. It is also RESILIENT and can absorb changes imposed upon it, but not without limit.” – Lana Leopold from "A Reverence for Rivers", 1977
About RESILIENCE:
Sometimes concepts and themes announce themselves in an undeniable manner. Last fall, while combing through calendar archive stacks, the above quote from our 1977 calendar drew us in.
Nearly 50 years later, the relevance in this call for adaptability resonates deeply after Tropical Storm Chantal left a wake of devastation across central North Carolina including historic flooding of the Eno River basin. We found it hard-pressed to consider a more fitting tone-setter for 2027 than RESILIENCE.
And so we asked: What does RESILIENCE look like to you? Perhaps in the land's endurance to adjust and reform. Perhaps in the spirit of communities coming together to offer help and healing. Perhaps in celebrating the long history of the people who inhabited the Eno before us. Perhaps in the spinning, and re-spinning, of a single spider’s web.
Inside the pages, you will find first-hand accounts and interpretations of RESILIENCE presented in snapshots and prompted prose, all from the perspectives of our Eno community.
